Hormone Loving Chocolate and Cauliflower Smoothie

I’m a little excited that the weather is finally warming up here in South Australia, as for me, with warmer weather comes more food options. Food options that I can throw lots of extra superfoods into for minimal caloric addition and to help counteract some of the holiday indulgence and help my body perform its cleaning functions.


Our ability to use food as medicine is greatly understated as our education is often focused around the macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fats), and less about the micronutrients and naturally occurring chemical compounds that have the ability to perform some pretty amazing biochemical reactions within the body.


Take the cruciferous family for example. One of the chemical compounds it contains is indole-3-carbinol (I3C). I3C can help to balance our hormones through supporting oestrogen metabolism and detoxification, increasing testosterone levels and supporting gut and liver health (and lots more!)


The following recipe has cauliflower and maca which are both from the cruciferous family, so give this Chocolate Cauliflower Smoothie a go if your hormones and liver are in need of a little extra support. (I promise it tastes much better than it sounds!)


Ingredients – Serves 2


✨1 heaped cup of frozen cauliflower (if you’re doing this yourself, I like to lightly steam before freezing)


🍌2 frozen bananas


✨2 tablespoons of almond butter (we love @hempfoodsaustralia)


🥛2 cups of dairy-free milk (not soy)


✨2 scoops of @kissedearth chocolate protein powder


🍫2 tablespoons of @powersuperfoods cacao powder


✨2 tablespoons of @powersuperfoods maca powder
